After landing in Kenya, we stayed in Nairobi for one night. In the evening, we explored the city of Nairobi. Since our main destination was the Masai Mara, we didn't spend much time in Nairobi. The next morning, we left for the Masai Mara.
At morning, our journey began with an exciting road trip from Nairobi to the Masai Mara National Park, which was about a five to six hour drive. Away from the hustle and bustle of the city, we passed through rural areas and lush green wilderness. There, we were accompanied only by the beauty of nature.
Along the way, we stopped at the Rift Valley Viewpoint, from where we could see a sweeping panoramic view of the entire valley. Even though we were traveling during the short rainy season, clouds and rain obscured some of the view, the moment was still extraordinary. The green hills of the Rift Valley and the flowing streams of the rivers brought a strange peace to our eyes.
The last stop on our road trip was Narok, the last major town before entering the Maasai Mara. Stopping here, we rested for a while and experienced the local way of life.
This was where our first wildlife sighting came, which further heightened our expectations. A gazelle stood by our path, which made our experience even more special.
Our road trip to the Maasai Mara created an excitement in us. But, we realized that our adventure had not yet begun—it was a new journey, where every moment gave rise to a new experience.
Arrival at Zebra Plains Mara River Camp
After a thrilling five and a half hour drive, we finally arrived at Zebra Plains Mara River Camp, which was our home for the next three nights. Our camp was just a few foot step from the Masai Mara National Reserve. This meant that the next morning’s safari was only a few minutes’ drive away— we were very exciting!
The camp’s master suite was a real treat. The bed was incredibly soft and comfortable, perfect for our rest. The bathroom had a spacious shower and double sinks, giving it a truly luxurious feel. But the highlight of the suite was its balcony. The only boundary separating us from the wildlife was a few wooden poles—it was a wonderful feeling, as if we were one with nature.
In the evening, we enjoyed a delicious meal overlooking the river. The atmosphere with the meal was absolutely perfect, allowing us to enjoy the gentle flow of the river and the natural beauty of the surroundings. As night fell, members of the local Maasai tribe made our day a special experience by performing traditional songs and dances. This cultural performance was a perfect end to our first day.
The First Safari
The next morning, we woke up at 5:30 and dress up for our first safari. The early morning is the best time to see wildlife, especially predators in action. Having grown up watching nature documentaries, this moment truly felt like a dream come true.
Our first encounter was with a mother cheetah named Nasip Pi, which means “happiness” in the Maasai language. She had left her four cubs to hunt, but her efforts were unsuccessful. Reuniting with her cubs and expressing her affection through soft chirps to communicate with them was an incredibly heartwarming moment. The cubs, who were only four months old, were full of energy, jumping on each other with excitement.
We continued our safari and soon a herd of elephants approached us. A small baby elephant stole the show, casually following its mother as the older elephants grazed nearby. The sight of elephants crossing right in front of our car normally.
Then, we saw a pride of lions with some beautiful cubs. Our guide told us that this was the Noch family, descendants of the famous lion Noch. Our first safari gave us an experience that we will remember for a lifetime.
Whole Day of Wildlife Encounters
Our morning was absolutely incredible, full of scenery—zebra, eland, ostrich, and more lions. The natural beauty and wildlife, surrounded by a fresh sun, our day was even more special. We were truly blessed.
During our safari, we see a young male lion from the Marsh Coalition. His mane is not yet fully grown, but he is slowly starting to show his strength and power. It was a thrilling experience to watch him—quiet, yet powerful.
Then, we saw another female cheetah, Nora. Although she was an old cheetah, she had an extraordinary agility. Despite her age, she was still as lively as a kitten at play. She moved quickly and gracefully, as if she had no thought for her prey.
But the most dramatic sight of the day was a huge male lion defending a buffalo from vultures and scavengers. The lion was trying to pull its prey to safety from them, and the sight was absolutely incredible. We know that moments like this are rare and make our day even more memorable.
The Second Safari—More Big Five Encounters
On our second morning, we started again. Our aim was to see all the Big Five today. We had already seen lions, elephants and buffalo, and now we were waiting for rhinos and leopards.
Our safari began with a lion pride, which was absolutely incredible. The highlight was the sight of four to five month old lion cubs. Their wonderful play and cuddling with their mother was looking so cute.
As we entered the reserve, we finally reached the Mara River. This river is known for its dramatic migrations, where crocodiles and hippos frolic. We took a guided walking safari along the riverbank, where we saw a mother crocodile with her young calves, and a little further away a large hippo stood out of the water.
But the most exciting moment of the day came when we saw a black rhino. There are fewer than 50 of these rhinos left in the Masai Mara, so seeing one in the open was a rare and special experience. It was a great experience, one we will never forget!
The elusive leopard hunts
During our safari, we were able to see only one of the Big Five, the leopard. The day before, when we approached a leopard in a tree, it had climbed a branch a while ago. But its presence was obscured by the dense foliage and we could not see anything.
Later that evening, we returned to the tree, waiting for another chance. We stood under the tree for over an hour, but the leopard was nowhere to be seen. This experience teaches us that being attuned to the uncertainty and infinite mystery of nature is a special aspect of safari life.
Sometimes, elusive animals hide themselves from view, but this experience remains part of the beauty and indescribable quality of nature.
